Coleus Seeds

Coleus is such a delight! It’s so easy to start from seed that children can — and should do it — because the sight of those tiny leaves already colored and patterned in the exotic forms that Coleus takes is simply wonderful! It’s also an easy plant to grow from cuttings.

Discover Colorful Coleus for Indoors and Out

For coleus, just root a stem in wet sand or even a glass of water! And, for the truly determined, Coleus is actually a perennial that can be kept going for several years with a little judicious pruning.

Coleus (Solenostemon scutellarioides, formerly Coleus blumei) burst on the Western gardening scene in the 1850s and within 30 years had become the most popular houseplant in both England and America. In the 1990s, it underwent a huge revival, with new colors and forms joining the rediscovered favorites of 100+ years ago. Today, it is one of the most popular plants for shade gardens.

We are delighted to offer Coleus seeds in a large variety of colors and patterns. Some coleus have broad leaves with well-defined color patterns, while others have intricately scalloped edges. Give this foliage plant part shade for best color, keep the soil moist and the drainage good and it will reward you with months and months of beauty. Then in the fall, take cuttings of your favorite coleus plants and grow them as houseplants through the winter. In the spring, repeat the process again and add them to the shade garden. Purchase the coleus mixed seeds for the greatest variety of colors and patterns of leaves. Coleus can send up a flower stem, but most gardeners will remove those so that the plant puts all its energy into growing more colorful leaves. Who needs flowers with brilliant leaves like these?
