Here are some other characteristics the different species of Phlox have in common besides abundant clusters of blooms. They are perfect for the border and often suitable for the vase, they all release a delightful fragrance that attracts butterflies and hummingbirds and they are all easy-going plants that require little maintenance and are untroubled by pests like deer.

Phlox paniculata is an improved version of the phlox you may remember from your childhood. Unfortunately, that phlox was very susceptible to powdery mildew. Breeders have worked hard to improve phlox by making it resistant to powdery mildew. Today’s gardeners have happily returned to growing these beautiful flowers with their large flower heads and strong stems, making them great in the flower border or the vase.

Phlox drummondii is an annual phlox. Usually a little shorter plant, this phlox will look stunning in the front of your flower border! This is a great choice for container gardens or hanging baskets as well. It has a longer blooming period than the other types of phlox.

Phlox subulata is a ground cover phlox. While this phlox is short in stature, it sure isn’t short on impact. This variety of phlox is also known as Creeping Phlox. Creeping Phlox is the perfect plant solution for a steep slope or a rocky area. Creeping Phlox is equally beautiful as a border plant in your perennial bed. Creeping Phlox can be purchased as plants or you can start your own with Creeping Phlox seeds.
